This is an opportunity for you (LGBT neighbors of all ages) to share your ideas on how we can create a vibrant and caring community and how we can reach out to our LGBT seniors on the hill who are often isolated .

We anticipate that this meeting will be a dynamic first step as we create our vision of our Bernal Heights community. You and your ideas are vital to that evolving vision of our village on the hill. We’ll have pizza and other light fare. Child care will be provided but please let us know how many children and their ages. We will also have a senior LGBT resource table and we encourage you to bring information that you may have to share with your neighbors.

Not one person showed up to support street cleaning. The petitions were 80% against. A couple of people supported street cleaning, and the balance of the 20% were never home to contact.

I got back from a hearing at City Hall yesterday. DPW is trying to start mechanized street cleaning on 3 blocks of Gates St., where I live and 3 blocks of Virginia, above Mission. The first block of Virginia has it already. There would be 2 hour no parking on each side of the street, once a week, the same as others streets that have street cleaning. Tickets are $50.00. We only found about it 2 weeks ago. One flyer was discovered down on Cortland Ave. DPW says they put notices on both streets, but none of us ever saw any. I think they are under pressure from the Mayor's office because of Newsom's "clean streets initiative". In 1 week we were able to get over 80% AGAINST on a petition. Some people are on vacation, or out of town. The hearing judge decided because of complaints about poor noticing on our streets that there will be a 2nd hearing in Sept. About 25 people took off work to attend. Not 1 person in favor attended. There are many gray areas about how this came about and how to procede. Ms. Pilar from Tom Ammiano's office has been very helpful after receiving many e-mails, fax's, and our petitions-100% against. This seems to be mainly about getting rid of parked cars and not about clean streets. It seems anybody can start a petition in favor of it and submit it to the DPW. DPW says they received 2 petitions with 10 and 15 sigantures, but they won't let us view the petition. We can't find anybody who says they signed it. Perhaps whoever started it signed up people not on our streets. The DPW website says you must sign up as many people as possible. DPW came with some pictures of leaves at curbside, but no litter. I feel we don't get much foot traffic which produces litter. I'm interested in your thoughts.

All is in immaculate condition. Great starter set. Asking $500. It is a steal considering it is solid wood (!) dark brown finish w/ wood-grain hi-gloss laminate tops. This was my parents wedding bedroom set and has been kept in very good condition since its purchase in 1955!! I live at the top of Alabama & Bradford, i can help transport locally, but a truck will be needed for the dressers. e-mail me redkayte@yahoo.com if you are interested we can arrange for viewing.

Thought some might be interested in the urban hike happening this saturday (these are usually posted over in the bayareahiking tribe...but tomorrow's seemed a propos here:

August 25th SF City Hill Climb

10-ish Miles BUT the great thing about City hikes is you can stop for coffee or hop on a bus or cab just about anytime you want! If you don't know the busses, we'll help you out. Do one hill or all of them or anything in-between. We're meeting at a coffee shop at 10am; I'm just wearing sneakers...
Meeting at Martha Brothers on Cortland @ 10am.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=745+Cortland+Ave.+San+Francisco&sll=37.77916,-122.42009&sspn=0.801022,1.697388&ie=UTF8&ll=37.740449,-122.414947&spn=0.006261,0.013261&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1

Hiking up Bernal Hill, Mt. Davidson, Twin Peaks, Tank Hill, Monument Hill, Buena Vista Park and Corona Heights, then back to Cortland....
Ignore the map--our hike is half as far as the one shown there, but there's a goofy record of lots these places over at http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&FriendID=6093222&blogMonth=8&blogDay=14&blogYear=2007

____________________________________________________
September 2nd
Angel Island--the paved loop plus the Mt Livermore "summit" hike

8.6 Miles (Time Permitting--we may only do 6 or 7 miles in order to catch the last Ferry)
http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/468/files/AngelIslandPDFRev0905.pdf
We'll do the Sunset Trail to Mt. Livermore, and then the North Ridge Trail down to the Perimeter Road which we'll do clockwise (folks who want to skip the Perimeter trip will can easily go counter-clockwise the other way to the Ferries).
This one is all about the views--the perimeter road is paved and full of strollers and bikes, but Angel Island is an amazing vantage point.
Get Ferry Tickets here:
http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com/Ferry/Angel/angelislandsummerschedule.cfm
Folks can meet at the SF Ferry Building at 10:45 to take the 11:20 Ferry.
Return ferry leaves Angel Island at 3:55.
Here's a little more info (but not the hike we're doing) http://www.bahiker.com/northbayhikes/angelisland.html
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

September 8th
Mt Tam East Peak plus Inspiration Point

Meet at 10:30am. Mountain Home Inn/Throckmorton Fire Station parking off Panoramic Higway (see brochure link:
http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/471/files/MtTamalpaisBrochure.pdf )
Hogback to Hoo Koo Ee Koo to Temelpa trail up and Fern Trail Down, approx. 10 miles. Kinda tough but scenic as all get out. Check out the photo from last winter: http://bayareahiking.tribe.net/photos/768fd893-d226-4c1a-9927-d74a99717ac3
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

September 23rd
Redwood Regional Park--Stream Trail Loop

This one's 3.5 miles but for folks interested in something longer we might make it a double loop after returning to the trailhead, heading out for another 7 miles further up to the ridge trail perhaps...
11am--meet near the Fishway Interpretive Site at the first parking area after the Redwood Gate entrance off Redwood Road (see map).
http://www.ebparks.org/files/EBRPD_files/brochure/redwood_map_full.pdf
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let us know if you're coming so we know to look for you!
We'll get you a ride if you need one.
These are low-to-no-pressure groups--folks can run ahead with their stopwatches and headphones, dawdle and snack endlessly, take pictures, meditate, trot, ruminate, chat, not-chat, you name it. We just get there and enjoy the place however we each see fit, trying not to hinder anyone else from doing the same.

Cheers!
:)

Here's one for the books: We live up on Mullen Avenue, off of Alabama and there have been a lot of changes recently, most of them just plain dumb. First, they started 90 degree parking at the corner of Mullen and Alabama, which means you cannot see traffic coming down the hill on Alabama. To make matters worse, they moved the stop sign from the corner of Mullen and Alabama to (GET THIS) thirty feet up Mullen. This means there is no stop sign at the corner, its one third of the way up Mullen Avenue. I guess this means you stop on the middle of the hill, then step on the gas and drive blindly out into a dangerous intersection. Man, A chimp with learning disability could of made a better judgment call on this situation. So who do we complain to about correcting this situation. There is going to be a fatal accident one of these days. For those of you that don't know the intersection, I beg you to drive by (VERY CAREFULLY) and check out the mess. I try not to complain about things is life, but this one is a safety hazard.

A small committee of Elsie Street Neighbors have been busy since our last meeting regarding reducing the risk of fire on Bernal Hill. Much of the hill is covered with dry grass. Some parts along the property line of many residents along Elsie, Bonview and Ripley have thick tree and brush cover with lots of dead leaves, fallen limbs, dried grass and other consumables. (The committee includes Madeline Flemate, Monica Stokes, myself and other neighbors).

We have walked the hill to show these “Hot Spot” locations to the Fire Marshall. We have sent E-mails to Park and Recreation as well as DPW regarding removing the flammable material on the hill to reduce the risk of catastrophic fire. There has been a excellent response from these departments on these issues. In addition, Pilar Schiavo of Supervisor Tom Ammiano’s office and Alfred Pedroza of the Mayor’s office have been strong supporters of our efforts.

On Wednesday, August 15th, there is a meeting at the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center (across from the Library) at 6:00 PM to meet with city officials to discuss how to reduce fire risk on the dry hill sides above Alemany Blvd and the top of Bernal Heights. Attending from the city will be the Fire Marshall (she lives in Bernal), Captain Chignell from Ingleside, Alfred Pedroza of the Mayor’s office, Executives from DPW and Park and Recreation as well as other city representatives. We want to hear a report from them regarding the action they have taken to address our concerns and the time table to complete the work. And we will all have follow-up questions as well as other “Hot Spot” locations that need action. Do you have a vacant lot next door that is loaded with trash, dried grass and dead brush – a potential fire hazard? Bring the location to the meeting to get action – there are laws that require lot owners to clean and cut down potential fire fuel. If you go to only one meeting this year – let this be the one…

Tell your neighbors and lets try to get a good turn out for this meeting to show the city that we are concerned and that we want results.
We have been going back and forth for over a year, lost our contractor and have now completely lost contact with the commission (no returned phone calls or emails) for the last 2 months. We've particularly been stuck w/ the historical section over the past 7 months -- but our main planner assures me that much scrutiny is yet to come. Our plans are hardly ambitious, but do involve structural additions to the house.

Can you please share some of your experiences with the planning commission and any tricks you may have to get them to at least respond? Do I have any recourse? The historical person has told me in no uncertain terms that trying to overrule his decision will cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars. I've tried speaking to Tom Ammiano, but haven't been able to get him to return my emails either. It seems too trivial a case to bring forward to a newspaper or ombudsman.

Additionally, if any of you are currently having issues, perhaps we can come forward together?

Now, I want to support my community and everything, but I wish Good Life could have followed the model of Trader Joe's and gone the cheap generic route instead of the super-expensive "boutique" route.

The gorgeous New river, which is one of the oldest rivers in the country, runs near it. College students love to float down it and climb the mountains which are close by.

I'm just heartsick about these murders. I worked at virginia tech in 1980 in the Chemistry department. My sister volunteered there with countless students and my brother-in-law taught there for years. I dated a police officer there who's still in active duty. I've contacted him to tell him people all over the world are thinking of them. I have college age kids so I particularly empathize with the parents who sent their loved ones to school, expecting them to be safe.
"All Americans have the right to be safe from gun violence in their homes, neighborhoods, schools, and places of work and worship.

All children have the right to grow up in environments free from the threat of gun violence.

Gun violence is a public health crisis that harms not only the physical, but also the spiritual, social, and economic health of our families and communities.

The availability and lethality of guns make death or severe injury more likely in domestic violence, criminal activity, suicide attempts, and unintentional shootings.

It is possible to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by gun violence with reasonable, common sense policy."
The Brady campaign to prevent gun violence has excellent statistics that prove that nations that implement gun control have much less gun violence.
Also, I love the restaurants already in the neighborhood but I think there could be better food still. We are sooo close to The Mission where there is a great abundance of fantastic food, some of it very reasonably priced. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I've noticed that some members here seem to be very active in neighoborhood planning-type stuff, so does anyone know of any new restaurant openings?

I've also seen a store more towards the Bayshore side of Cortland, sort of across the street from Little Nepal. I saw they had applied for a liquor license, which is exciting. Does anyone know what this place might be?

That is all, except... What is up with the new-ish art gallery that opened up on Cortland? I don't mean to be rude, but what is going on with those pregnant elephant/human things? Would anyone have those in their house? It's cool that they wanted to make a go at an art gallery here in Bernal Heights, but I just can't see it surviving for long. Sounds rude. I'm a cynic, sorry. Oscar Wilde said a cynic is someone who know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

My son had the Latin Scramble...yum, and I had the Citrus French Toast..also yummy. The portions are large so don't go unless you're hungry. They also serve lunch and dinner. The menu is California and Latin Salvadorian. You're sure to find something on the menu that you can't resist. I hear from excellent sources that the turkey hash is also a good choice. One of today's specials is pumpkin pancakes.

So, the day before Thanksgiving, I was riding my bike down Elsie from Holly Park when some-random-thing-that-I-don't-actually-remember happened and the next thing I know I'm on standing on the sidewalk in a daze with bloody fingers while two kindly folks strongly suggest I sit down awhile and a third person says, "I'll get your bike!"
It was very surreal, I couldn't remember my street (Virginia) and all the ones these nice folks named sounded like Martian words: Blimskadip Street? Fumzoopa Street? Eshbeshawappa Street? No no no. Very confusing... And there was this big blur in the middle of my vision...
Anyway, I was and am very grateful. These three folks stayed with me (at 7:30am or so) until the ambulance came and carted me away, which seemed like a very long time. So
a) seems like we have nice neighbors around here...
and
b) does anyone in this tribe know who those folks were or, just maybe, are they tribesters? I'm thinking maybe I should put up thank you notes on Cortland.

Cheers all.
Oh, all I suffered was a broken pinky...after all that...kinda embarassing. :)

The kids had fun though, they are exhausted and very satisfied with their loot (from various vendors incl the "must have" Heartfelt grab bags). I didn't see a lot of bad behavior this year. No fights/arrests. We didn't see any anyways.

What do you all think- did you have fun? Find treasures? Meet up with old friends? See something memorable or amazing?

..........................
Man shot to death in Bernal Heights
Jaxon Van Derbeken, Chronicle Staff Writer

Monday, August 14, 2006

(08-14) 14:38 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco police are hoping that surveillance cameras posted at a Bernal Heights public housing project will help them solve the slaying of a 28-year-old man who was gunned down between buildings there early today.

Travis Williams, a suspected drug dealer with a long criminal history, was shot repeatedly shortly before 6 a.m. in between two buildings on the 900 block of Ellsworth Street.

San Francisco police Inspector Dennis Maffei said Williams was known to sell narcotics in the area where he was attacked.

"We are following up with the cameras," he said. "We don't know if it was caught on tape or not.''

Williams was pronounced dead at San Francisco General Hospital.

In June, San Francisco police announced that San Francisco's fledgling program to post video cameras in crime-plagued neighborhoods had paid off for the first time with the arrest of a man suspected of shooting a 13-year-old girl in the same housing project.

Bennie Powell, 21, was arrested on attempted murder charges Tuesday night in the April 27 shooting, which left the unidentified victim hospitalized for two days.

Police said a review of the tape helped cement the case against Powell.

If you live on Mullen street and have been vandalized, threatened, or harassed, or have witnessed any of those crimes, please contact me. I am interested in starting a neighborhood petition against residents of 354 Mullen street as public nuisances. Please read on:

I made the mistake of parking in front of 354 Mullen Street, Saturday June 10th, between 11:00 and 12:00 am after getting home from work.

On Monday afternoon when I returned to my car; a rare, 1961 Cadillac Eureka Hearse, I was shocked to discover a broken windshield and dried on eggs, splattered across the roof, hood, and right side of the car.

There were rocks splintered across the hood, but the rock that broke my windshield was not on the car. It was neatly set on the sidewalk on top of some lumber next to the stair well leading up to 354 Mullen Street. These rocks came from their yard. The angle in which the eggs hit my car was from the right of my car, and above; the garden at the top of the stairs.

I photographed everything, took my car to a self service car wash, washed and vacuumed the broken glass, and then drove it to a police station to file a report. My assessment of who did this was corroborated by a neighbor with prior experience with those persons. According to him, this couple has been vandalizing vehicles, leaving notes, and making threats against people who park on the street in front of their house for 2-3 years. After many phone calls and taking my car into shops, I am still unable to get this fixed. The first shop estimated $1600, and I am waiting on what the current one discovers. It has been suggested to me that vandalism of prperty resulting in $1000 or more in damages is a felony.

Everything was fresh and a lot of imagination went into the preparation which is always appreciated by vegies. I'm hoping that someone on the tribe that eats fish will comment on the Sushi and Sashimi. The carnivore with me didn't like the New York Steak. It came to the table whole without a steak knife and was served with Chinese rice. But we'd go back again and try other plates.

And if you are into vegie Chinese ask them to fix you spicy eggplant with an assortment of veggies, like snow peas, bell pepper, red onions, and tofu. It's not on the menu so you really have to give them direction but it's worth every bite.

CITY|SPACE presents a reconsideration of the experience, culture and meaning of our nation's least-loved transit mode. An art exibition and events including panel discussions and film screenings from June 16th to July 2nd in the Levin Brothers Warehouse, 2255 Third Street, betw. 19th and 20th Street, San Francisco. Opening night on Friday, June 16th, 7pm. FREE.

Please forward to anyone you think might be interested... Thanks!

http://www.city-space.org/events/gotb/2006_get_on_the_bus.html

About Get on the Bus
Get on the Bus will consider the experience, culture, and meaning of our nation’s least-loved transit mode. Stigmatized as the transit of last resort—the realm of the poor, elderly, and infirm—the bus nonetheless moves millions of people every day. On the cutting edge in some cities, marginalized in others, the bus evokes a surprising range of emotions for people, planners, cities and artists. Get on the Bus will begin to illuminate the world of the bus as a ubiquitous but neglected arena of city life.

An open call drew submissions from seven countries. Selected works are drawn from throughout the US, as well as Canada, Mexico, and the UK, and include fine art, documentary photography, lighthearted urban interventions, and a range of film and video projects. In addition innovative, historic, and artistically modified buses are anticipated to be on display at various times during the exhibition. CITY|SPACE is working with local transit agencies, including San Francisco MUNI, AC Transit, and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and expects to collaborate with them on a variety of projects, including the donation of buses to the exhibit.

Get on the Bus will be on display at Levin Brothers Warehouse located at 2255 3rd St, in San Francisco's Dogpatch neighborhood. This striking 9000 square-foot renovated warehouse space, at the convergence of 3 major bus lines and adjacent to the San Francisco’s new third street light rail line, has been kindly donated for the exhibition by the Martin Building Company, and features a large yard that can accommodate several buses.

A panel discussion, entitled "No F#@*ing Way! Selling America on the Bus," will bring together marketing and public relations professionals to consider how bus transit might be creatively reimagined to broaden its appeal.

A second panel presented with SPUR and entitled the Future of the Bus, will consider the rapidly unfolding future of the bus, as Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems and new hybrid and fuel cell technologies alter the landscape of urban transportation.

CITY|SPACE will also present an evening of bus-related film, in the spirit of Asphalt Shorts, CITY|SPACE's popular annual festival of short films about cities and urbanism.

An additional component of Get on the Bus will be the publication of an anthology entitled "Get on the Bus: Short and True Tales of Bus Travel". The anthology will be self-published in conjunction with the exhibition, with future plans to develop a book proposal and approach publishers.

Get on the Bus is supported in part by generous grant from the LEF Foundation and by the donation of exhibition space by the Martin Building Company. CITY|SPACE is a fiscally sponsored project of Intersection for the Arts.

About CITY|SPACE
CITY|SPACE is a cultural organization dedicated to exploring the built environment through events and exhibitions in a wide range of disciplines, including design, visual art, cultural landscape research, and film. CITY|SPACE cuts across disciplinary boundaries to draw on a wide range of work: aesthetic, documentary, architectural, and beyond, that converges around the city as we find it, make it, and struggle with it. By engaging Bay Area audiences in complex and challenging questions about the cities we inhabit, we hope to deepen our communities' experience, understanding, and stewardship of urban places

CITY|SPACE was founded in 2002 by a group of urban designers, planners, artists, and enthusiasts of the urban landscape. Since 2003, CITY|SPACE has presented Asphalt Shorts, an annual program of short films on cities and urbanism projected on a parking lot wall in Downtown Oakland, creating an impromptu public space in a forgotten corner of the city. In 2004, CITY|SPACE mounted the exhibition Urban Legends: The City in Maps at Oakland's Oaklandish gallery.

A few years back BART did a feasibility study on a BART station for 30th and Mission. The study included costly, above ground station but there's no reason why we can't opt for the least expensive BART stop. Apparently there's still hope for a stop at 30th...NYC style. That is, stairs/escalator/elevator down to platform.

There's a fair amount of support for such an idea coming from some folks in Bernal and Noe and I was just wondering if there's support on the tribe for such a stop.

Question: Would you be willing to sign a petition to ask BART to consider a NYC style BART stop at 30th and Mission and would you be willing to attend a hearing to show support for such a stop. I support the idea. I don't mind walking to BART at 24th in good weather but it's a real drag when it's wet and windy.
