Would you support a NYC style BART stop at 30th and Mission Streets???

A few years back BART did a feasibility study on a BART station for 30th and Mission. The study included costly, above ground station but there's no reason why we can't opt for the least expensive BART stop. Apparently there's still hope for a stop at 30th...NYC style. That is, stairs/escalator/elevator down to platform.

There's a fair amount of support for such an idea coming from some folks in Bernal and Noe and I was just wondering if there's support on the tribe for such a stop.

Question: Would you be willing to sign a petition to ask BART to consider a NYC style BART stop at 30th and Mission and would you be willing to attend a hearing to show support for such a stop. I support the idea. I don't mind walking to BART at 24th in good weather but it's a real drag when it's wet and windy.

  • it would be nice but where would everone park thier cars???
would we be getting a parking structure for all those folks who drive from Daly City or elsewhere?
i like BART stations esp if they're underground..no loitering around the station
    no nonsense travel
    • The out-of-town stations have parking lots so why would anyone not park there? As for those in town, we might get a few folks looking for parking but I don't think this happens as much near Mission St. as it does Glen Park because Glen Park has free parking ( which is about to change because meters are going in). I've never seen anyone trying to park at 24th and then go downtown and I figure that the same will be true for Mission and 30th. We may want to consider asking for a drop/pick-up zone during the busy hours.
  • Parking though a nice idea is out of the question. None of the city Bart stations have parking. Glen Park has no parking and I'm pretty sure Balboa Park has none either and they are both closer to DC. The Daly City station has parking for folks coming from San Mateo County. Now that Bart has stops down into S. Mateo parking for commuters outside the city is not much of an issue. A station at 30th and Mission would create a transit hub for the J church and the numbers 14, 24, 26, 49, 67and Sam Trans busses. It would be cool to have a covered turn out for the busses like the transit hubs in London but I'd settle for a NYC style station. An ambitious plan would take over the Safeway parking lot and rebuild the Safeway with roof top parking like the Taraval Safeway. This would give a place for all the busses to stop and possibly stand by for schedule coordination covered from the elements.
  • Oddly enough, 30th & Mission was designed originally as a future BART stop. The train tracks level out and there is already some infrastructure in place to make it easy to put a stop there. As for above-ground, it's no question that there would have to be a "NYC style" (or for those people whose idea of public transit seems to exclude the Muni, we're talking about a stop like the Muni's Church Street Station stop).
  • Well, I, for one, would absolutely support it and would absolutely sign a petition. 24th Street is just a smidge too far away for BART to be as useable for me as I would like, since I moved to the top of Cortland from the Mission -- and I miss it. Tell me where to sign.

A BART stop at 30th would drastically change the surrounding neighborhood down there, though, I would think, and I'd be interested to hear what the merchants and residents nearby think. On the one hand, it would be great for business development, for folks trying to get to the hospital, and for Mission-dwellers who shop at Safeway. On the other hand, it might open that part of the Mission up to some gentrification.

I'm not sure that it would change the 'hood very much at all. First, Mission & 30th is already an urban environment. Ridershiop to/from 30th would probably be a lot less than Glen Park given that the 30th/Mission area is served by all kinds of Muni especially the J car. Glen Park BART ridership (station exits) are about 6500 a day. I'd say that half that number would use 30th. Okay, can the neighborhood serve 3300 people entering and leaving that station? Personally, I think so.
    • I'm not sure that a BART station at 30th St would lead to gentrification-- the areas around the 16th St and 24th St stops are less gentrified than most of the Mission, and the area around 30th and Mission isn't cheap to begin with.

A 30th and Mission BART station certainly would improve transit in the area, though.
      • gentrification? i'd be more worried about it becoming a drug hub. if that could be addressed intelligently, i would think positively about it. also the parking: coleridge st is a short block away, has no meters or time limits. people will find it pretty quick and park here to take bart the rest of the way downtown for work. that would be a drag for the neighbors here.

but it would be VERY convenient!
        • If BART came to 30th and Mission St., residential parking stickers would be necessary to prevent non-resident commuters from parking all day around the BART stop to take BART downtown.

This would be most unfortunate. Bernal has a long tradition (well, 20 years anyhow) of NOT endorsing residential parking permits because of the added cost and the desire not to be a part of the parking bureaucracy. All the other neighborhoods nearby (Glen Park, Noe Valley, Potrero) use the permits, but so far Bernal has held firm. I'd hate to see that change.
