Hey Kids,
Here's one for the books: We live up on Mullen Avenue, off of Alabama and there have been a lot of changes recently, most of them just plain dumb. First, they started 90 degree parking at the corner of Mullen and Alabama, which means you cannot see traffic coming down the hill on Alabama. To make matters worse, they moved the stop sign from the corner of Mullen and Alabama to (GET THIS) thirty feet up Mullen. This means there is no stop sign at the corner, its one third of the way up Mullen Avenue. I guess this means you stop on the middle of the hill, then step on the gas and drive blindly out into a dangerous intersection. Man, A chimp with learning disability could of made a better judgment call on this situation. So who do we complain to about correcting this situation. There is going to be a fatal accident one of these days. For those of you that don't know the intersection, I beg you to drive by (VERY CAREFULLY) and check out the mess. I try not to complain about things is life, but this one is a safety hazard.

Re: Stop Sign Stupidity
Mon, July 23, 2007 - 9:38 AMthat's nuts. i'd call DPT - i'd think this would be a traffic concern. there are several corners around us with no stop signs at all - it doesn't make sense but people just stop anyway, thankfully. but i'm sure there have been accidents there in the past. -

Re: Stop Sign Stupidity
Mon, July 23, 2007 - 12:06 PMSounds like part of the city's traffic calming plan. I think they believe that the changes will make people slow down.
For traffic calming, we were notified several years ago that the city planned to alternate 90 degree parking on Folsom St., so that cars were parked 90 degrees on the east side of Folsom, on either side of Stoneman, a primary east-west corridor for NW Bernal. I wrote and called the city, saying that this plan would cost lives, by worsening visibility for drivers turning from Stoneman. I said if they wanted to slow down traffic on Folsom the safe way to do it would be a stop sign on Folsom at Stoneman.
So far they haven't made either change. -

Re: Stop Sign Stupidity
Thu, July 26, 2007 - 12:55 PMand speaking of Folsom and Stoneman... doesn't anybody remember when that big truck lost control, plowed into the JoJo (a band) house and someone got decapitated? I am stunned and amazed by what I see in our neighborhood on a daily basis! *most of it good tho. Oh.. but wait... the Vandals (not a band) on Mullen and Franconia are at it again! Smashing windows and poking out the eyes on our favorite neighborhood classic cars... lets catch these little punks!

Traffic calming was endorsed by members of the various Bernal neighborhood associations because too many people were speeding. For instance, Precita never used to have speed bumps, but after several people were struck by fast-moving cars they finally put in the bumps. Likewise on 3rd Street they vary the lanes so that people are forced to actively look at what they're doing and not use 3rd like a speedway.
I obey traffic laws, and I'm one of the few who does. I stop cleanly at stop signs. I go only as fast as is posted. People get annoyed at this (especially on the Bay Bridge and along the Central Freeway at Hospital Curve where both are posted for 50mph, but yet I have not been in any accidents, and given how much I drive (I do computer housecalls) , it's got to be how I drive and not just luck.
I was just up on Mullen a couple days ago and saw the stop sign situation. I'll admit that it's weird. I also saw a car try to take the full street zipping up the hill thinking that nobody else was on the street. His car nearly hit mine.
People simply have to slow down.

Re: Stop Sign Stupidity
Fri, July 27, 2007 - 6:49 PMit's too bad bernal streets are so narrow, or they could install round-abouts, which work really well from what I've seen. -

Re: Stop Sign Stupidity
Wed, August 1, 2007 - 7:28 AMHey Kids,
They moved the stop sign back down to the corner (from a third of the way up the block). Will wonders never cease. Now if they could just get rid of the 90 degree parking, but that would be too much to ask. I try not to be a grumpy middle aged man about this but I have issues with the city's lack of thinking safely.... -

Re: Stop Sign Stupidity
Fri, August 3, 2007 - 4:00 PMPublic policy is always a tug of war between what the residents want, what is safe, and what is expedient. I'm sure that lots of people want the 90 degree parking because it doubles the spaces. And most drivers refuse to use their garages or pay for parking, preferring to keep their personal property (their cars) on the street.
There is something to be said for putting obstacles in the way of a street so that drivers have to think about what they're doing, rather than plowing straight ahead at full speed. Too many times I see people just driving through a neighborhood unconsciously and unaware of others on the road. Often they're talking on their phones. Anything that would make them pay attention to the road is welcome.

Re: Stop Sign Stupidity
Mon, August 20, 2007 - 5:47 PMActually, the 90 degree parking wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that the spots are almost always taken by ginormous trucks or SUVs. There is no way of seeing what's coming down the hill. You just slowly creep out and pray.
