PG&E has just scheduled Anderson Street south of Cortland for it's gas pipe upgrade project. If anyone has already gone through this process, can you tell us what we're in for? I know the street will be torn up, but do they do anything major to actual houses to put in the new gas meter. Do you have to pay for this or do they cover the cost? How long does it take to complete a block? Knowing their track record, I'm not looking forward to this. Can anyone fill me in on what it's like? Thanks.

I recall they did our block about 10 years ago. No charge. Several months to do the whole neighborhood, but not long once they got to our block. We didn't get new gas meters. The gas went out briefly for the switchover, and I believe that PG&E had to come to our home to turn the gas back on-- they re-lit the pilot light on the water heater (our furnace is pilot-less) and they checked for safety.

They did our house about a month ago. There's the street construction, congestion, mess, noise, etc. for about a month.

The only individualized nuisance was having to be home for a day while PG&E turned off the gas. It look liked they swapped out the meter. I was in the house and heard them going in and out of the garage. Then they turned on the gas and checked all the appliances to make sure they were working.

All "free" (other than having to be home, and the monthly shock when you look at your bill).

You've got to get in a real zen state about the noise. I've been through two of these things in 2 neighborhoods. I work a lot at home and the first time I kept getting upset. Second time I made peace with it and found places outside of home to work. Next thing you know, it's over. Good luck.

Keep a close watch on any repaving of the street. On my street, 100 block of Gates, and the same for several streets East of me, when they finished there were almost no curbs left, because the street was raised so much. The paving was subbed to Annuzis concrete. Between Annuzis , PG&E, and the city being involved, everybody blamed the other guy. This was for undergrounding and gas upgrade. Also be careful of any sidewalk repair. They broke my clay pipe sewer vent, promised to replace it, and when I came home they had cemented / glued the pieces together like a broken plate.
