How lovely to find Bernal Heights Tribe! I've been in love with this part of sf!
Lived here for about ten years...To me it is the sacred ground of the city..haha
{ no seriously did you see those amazing owls on the Big hill???!}
I love Holly park...I just wish that the Big hill would not have those ugly antenas,
there should be nice chill out place with trees or something!!

    welcome; ah yes, the ugly antennas! too bad they make the hill so unattractive.

    i love to hike there myself. the hill always has a cool breeze even on hot days.

    i love bernal! you can find most anything you need right in our lil neighborhood!

      I wonder what those antennas acctualy are? Anyone knows? Once i wanted to ask the city about possibly removing or moving this somewhere else.. i guess that is too brave of an idea. but i think it is a great hill and someting much more artistic could be "erected" there to glorify our creative San Francisco? I am an utopist. i believe anything is possible!

        The antennas have been used to relay telephone calls, data, and TV programs. They've been in use since I believe the late 1950s and are owned by AT&T. The hilltop is important for 2-way relays as well. A typical 2-way radio in a delivery truck such as a FedEx van needs these hilltop repeaters in order to hit the dispatching transmitters because the small in-truck radios simply don't put out a signal anywhere big enough to reach the main transmitters.

        As to moving them somewhere else, it's gotta be a mountaintop. That's the nature of VHF and UHF radio.

            sharka, i love your idea of removing them and putting something lovely in their place! if we can't remove them, who says it has to be all ugly up there. i would love to find some way to restore the beauty up there. it has one of the best views in the city (and of the city) but it's totally uglied up by the antennas and that godawful building with all the graffitti and ugly fencing.

            wonder if there's ever been a community group which worked on beautifying it? precita eyes murals does such cool stuff all over bernal and the mission. and we have so many active neighborhood groups and artists.

            wish we could all put our heads together and pretty up the hill!
  • The Owls are Dead

    There is a note at the top of the Bernal Heights Stairs dated June 19th that sez the Owls are dead. The second Owls body was sent to a Wildlife Project (415.456-7283) in Marin for an Autopsy. Rumor is that the first owl was poisoined. Who would do that. Also the Ravens that nest on the hill do not like Owls and I have seen them attack the owls in flight.

    Losing Owls is bad news. They are an Oman and a protector. Now they are gone....

    Lets hope the hawks are not next.

    peace...

      There was sign up there earlier in the summer that said that the first owl died of a virus (I can't remember what it was....) and they were worried that it was contagious and that the second was at risk. So no poison, but still very sad. Let hope our coyote doesn't attract too much attention.
