New in the 'hood

My husband and I just moved here with our two-year-old son from a small community called La Honda - a redwood forest near Pesadero/Half Moon Bay. We're looking for recommendations for ways to meet progressive, open-minded, eccentric, interesting parents and non-parents. We just left behind a really great group of friends and are jonesing for some community in our new digs. My husband is kind of a solo flyer but he tends to groove with other musicians (base/electro rock), art movie fanatics (a la David Lynch), and people who speak Hebrew or any other second language. I tend to get a long with just about anyone who has a big heart and an open mind. Does anyone remember what it was like to be new in town? How did you meet the people you now call your friends?

Online, you might try the Bernal Parents Yahoo Group:
    groups.yahoo.com/group/ber...tsparents/

Undoubtedly, you'll meet other folks just going to neighborhood places, like playgrounds (with the kid), events (like the outdoor movie nights), bars/clubs (without the kid!), etc.

Thanks for the lead, Dan. That yahoo group is a gold mine! Are you sure I can't bring my kid to the bar... I saw something, somewhere about toddler disco... was I just dreaming?

no, you weren't dreaming. there was a "baby disco" event at Ruby Skye downtown in the last couple months or so. From the way the event was promoted and covered in resulting media, I found it kind of obnoxiously yuppie. Apparently it was successful in any case, so the out-of-town promoters will probably repeat. Seems like an opportunity to do something more community-oriented in a more low-key setting, if someone was so inclined.

Anyway, welcome; maybe we'll see you at a playground -- I have a 2-1/2 year old girl, and we're usually near our house at Precita, but sometimes go to the top of the hill.
