forgot to say it was in broad daylight with dozens of people around and no one offered any help despite my screams.

I just read your blog and that is really horrible.

I went through something similar (in Oakland, tho) awhile ago, and had PTSD as well. Glad to hear you are getting treatment for that, in addition to your physical wounds.

I work in the Civic Center area (also not a good part of town), and from that experience, I know it is a very common defense mechanism to not get involved, because you don't know what the attacker will do. At least someone did provide you with a license-plate number; hopefully that will be enough for the police.

I am so so sorry this happened to you. I make that walk twice every day. This is just awful. I hope you are getting genuine, personal in-person support in addition to these sad waves hello across the ether. I love our neighborhood and I hope you can love it again too. But beyond city living being tough and random and crazy, this is just too much. I really feel for you and wish you much much comfort and support coming away from this.
      :(
      Very best wishes...

Look on the Mission Tribe for my follow-up to this and what can be done to make the north of Chavez area more like the south of Chavez area.

I really don't know what to say _ I'm so sorry this happened to you, and I wish I could have done something. I make the same walk myself everyday ....

Can't change the past, but maybe we can change the future: If you would like a commuter-buddy for a while, someone to walk to the BART with, I heard towards mission via Cortland street around 7:30 ... PM me.

        And here's something i stole from a friend's blog:

This shall be my response to violence -- to love my friends and family more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before, to be intensely compassionate, to love unconditionally, to create art, to serve, to heal and help others heal, to have zest and enthusiasm and endless optimism, to refuse to be discouraged by defeats, to forgive, to seek to understand, and strive to remember that if we could read the secret history of our enemies, we would find in each life enough sorrow and suffering to disarm all hostility. Love is an endless act of forgiveness.

that's a beautiful quote. i'm reading pema chodron's "when things fall apart" and staying at my cousin's out in nature to heal. thank you to all my neighbors for your kind words.

I am really sorry to hear that. But please get mace or some other form of self defence. A lot of talk in this city about community and such is just that - talk. In reality people are too self centered to care about anything other than themselves, regardless of how they vote. But get well soon and teach the fuckers a lesson the next time.

Newbie: I'm sorry to hear about the attack on you and hope that you're on th road to recovery. The area that you were in has long been known as a dangerous place. It's mostly about drugs and gangs so it's nothing to mess with. I'm sending this article out just to remind everyone of the dangers in this area. Please be careful out there. When possible, please take the bus to BART. If you're into walking you might consider walking on Precita to Mission and then to BART. When possible, walk with a buddie.

The City is still a great place to live and Bernal of course is the best of San Francisco neighborhoods but we're still faced with the challenges that other urbans areas face.

S.F. man, 28, shot dead on street corner
              Marisa Lagos, Chronicle Staff Writer

              (05-03) 10:18 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- A 28-year-old San Francisco man was
shot to death on the corner of 26th and Harrison streets near Garfield
              Park Wednesday night, police said.
The shooting -- in front of a liquor store and across the street from the
city-owned Bernal Dwellings public housing facility -- occurred shortly
before 10:30 p.m., said San Francisco police Officer Maria Oropeza.
When police arrived, they found David Pollack on the sidewalk in front of
the store, suffering from gunshot wounds, she said. He was pronounced dead
              at the scene.
Police are "trying to talk to everyone in the neighborhood," to identify a
              suspect, Oropeza said.

I got mugged walking on Precita a couple years ago. Two guys in a car jumped out and grabbed my bag.

hard to believe, but observing the city, i think it might be just getting worse on crime in general? also coming from europian country, i never felt so unsafe, like here in usa. i hope you are feeling better. i would have really hard time if that happened to me personaly. peace, love.

Many friends of mine have been robbed in Europe-- in England, Spain, France, Italy, and especially on trains and other public transportation everywhere, and one friend was raped while a tourist in Russia-- so I don't think Europe is particularly free of crime. (I think that some types of petty theft are more common there.) But there is a lot less violence there, and European criminals generally don't have guns.

yes, i definitely can see tourists being robbed. there are gangs over there just for that. i think what gets me quite uncomfortable is knowing that anyone here in the US can have a gun in his pocket. the loose laws around guns are pretty disturbing. anyway it seems to me the whole world is getting little more nuts. peace and hope.

RE: no one helping a crime victim:

Here's a recent police report from Ingleside station, in which bystanders did help someone being mugged:

    06/15/07 3:50 pm 900 block of Naples

A victim was walking on the 900 block of Naples listening to his Ipod when
two suspects suddenly appeared, kicked and punched the victim, placed him
in a choke hold and took his Ipod. The suspects left the victim on the
street bleeding. Four local residents observed the attack and chased the
suspects down on the 800 block of Amazon. One of the suspects produced a
knife and attempted to intimidate the residents but one of the residents
produced a sword which forced the suspect to throw the knife down. Officers
Richmond Curry, Kevin Horan, Frank Valiquette, Christopher Porter, Wendy
Bear, Shawn Fulgado and Mark Monpas responded to the scene, took the
suspects into custody, retrieved evidence and facilitated having the victim
positively identify the suspects. The suspects, who live on the 1600 block
of Sunnydale and in Turlock, were arrested for robbery, felony assault and
conspiracy. This was great assistance from residents in the area helping a
victim on a violent crime. We will prepare the necessary documentation so
that these residents can be honored by the Police Commission. Case
    #070605806

Kind of curious that the bystander happened to have a sword. Maybe he was on his way to Ren Faire?

    Just what happened?
    Also, are you okay.
Please go into details, as this would help a lot of folks learn what to do, what not to do, where and what time to go and not.
    David
Oh yes, where are the crime stats located?
    • sorry ya'll hadn't been on here in a while and had not realized this thread was active again.

i followed up regularly with police. i must say i was very disappointed in the da and police follow up. inspector bini in robbery handled my case. he did follow up but it took him a long time; and i even saw my mugger on cesar chavez and reported it to him. he went to see if he could id her and sure enough she had a record and he got a photo for me to identify. i picked her out of a photo lineup with no hints from him. easy, she stood over me beating on me for what felt like 5 minutes so i got a good look at her face.

so the inspector seemed excited that this case would go forward. but NOOOOOOO, even though i made a positve id, even though i totally cooperated with the police, even though apparently inspector bini did his job, the DA's office said they would not prosecute!!!!!!

so folks, we still have a violent mugger on the street who assaulted and robbed at least 3 other people on the same day as me. she lives at cesar chavez in the public housing. avoid there!

i am going to work with the bernal heights neighborhood group to try to get a new da elected. i understand this da has a reputation of never prosecuting cases and leaving LOTS of criminals on the streets. i think that is why crime is so much worse in this city now.

here's the link to the bernal heights neighborhood group:
      www.bhnc.org/

if you want to read about the original assault, you can see my blog: people.tribe.net/newbie/bl...a8ca623431

and here's an article about buck bagot, an awesome organizer who got more cops assigned to the dangerous public housing in bernal, and is considering supporting an alternative for the da's office. someone who will actually prosecute criminals!
