Windmills? In Bernal?
Speaker Todd Pelman has developed a pilot wind turbine system and installed it at 23 Roscoe in Bernal Heights. Todd is a Bernal homeowner and is CEO of Blue Green Pacific, Inc.

“It is my hope that by gathering the feedback and consensus of my local community, we can work together to create a renewable energy model that ensures environmental, economic, and societal advancement.” - -- Todd Pelman

Would cyclists prefer to park their bikes on the street, as opposed to a bike rack on the sidewalk?

I would suggest instead multiple sidewalk bike racks, spread out along Bernal's stretch of Mission St., where the sidewalk has been widened for bus stops.

i would feel nervous parking my bike on the street. it's ugly enough when motorcycles get hit, i'd hate to see my poor little bicycle get squished. and it's not like we have a bunch of extra parking spaces for cars on mission, anyway.

plus, bikes need something structural to lock onto, which would hinder street cleaning, wouldn't it?

this doesn't make sense to me at all. i also would think more sidewalk bike racks are a better solution.

i just read that guardian article about the high incidence of stolen bikes. i like the idea of bike parking close to bart but what about security?

also, does anyone know what kind of bikes burglars DON'T like? am shopping.

love the ideas for windmills. would they replace that awful hideous graffittied building that ruins the beauty of bernal hill?

24th St BART already has indoor bike racks. I don't know how often bikes get stolen from there, but at least the bikes are protected from weather.

            Newbie:

The short answer is no. These windmills would be installed on the roofs of homes in Bernal. Please visit northwestbernalalliance.org and click on Calendar of Events to view a photo of the pilot project. The project sponsor is asking for an additional foot for the height of the windmill. Feel free to attend the meeting tonight to learn more about the project. All are welcome.

          emily:

please visit northwestbernalalliance.org and click on Calendar of events to view a photo of what this type of parking looks like. Such parking exists at the SF Main library. The bikes are protected from cars hitting them. The parking is specially built for bikes. Please check it out and let me know what you think. Our email address is northwestbernal@aol.com or feel free to attend the meeting tonight. All are welcome.
      • Re: Windmills in Bernal? Bike Racks too

        Wed, March 14, 2007 - 10:27 AM
We're working on this Dan but in places that bicyclists frequently use we can't put in enough racks to meet the needs. And please, send me your list for rack sites that you have in mind for Mission St. We need to get them on the list now. When the Bike Plan EIR is finally certified and the city can start installing bike racks again it will be good to have our requests at the top of the list.

You can send your list to northwestbernal@aol.com or attend the meeting tonight. All are welcome.

The best people to talk with are the people at the SF Bike Coalition, the largest bike group in SF. In fact, I'm surprised that they weren't invited to participate in tandem with the DPT person. As a sometime cyclist myself, I will say that bike lockers are the best idea overall because of the high incidence of bike theft. Bike Coalition Website: www.sfbike.org/

SF Bike has been involved. Seems that no one can make the meeting but it was published in the Bikers' Bulletin last week. They are very supportive. This type of on-street bike parking seems to be working at the library. Bike lockers would be a target for graffiti vandals on Mission St. don't you think? What is your experience with the bike parking at the library.

We're interested in hearing from those that use bikes as their mode of transportation. It seems that bike racks just don't make it in a popular area such as a coffee house so we're trying to create a better situation. This solution offers parking for several bikes at a time and because there isn't a car parked next to the sidewalk it would offer more greening and seating opportunities on the sidewalk. But hey, I'm open to hearing about your experiences and others as well. We need the input from those that ride bikes. And you can attend the meeting tonight or send an email to northwestbernal@aol.com Please get the word out. Let's get the entire community involved in finding great solutions for bike parking on Mission St.
