Re: Progressive Grounds...or Martha's?
Wed, August 9, 2006 - 11:37 AMChoosing between those 2, I'd go to Progressive Grounds for taste & atmosphere. Alhough, my favorite is Moonlight Cafe (they serve Capricorn Coffee, Mmmm!) Gotta say, the employees at Martha's are some of the nicest people around, so you can't lose either way.

Mon, August 21, 2006 - 8:18 PMNervous Dog Coffee
Mission and Kingston
The owner, Joe Belen was raised in Bernal. His mum was a dentist on the corridor for years and his brother is a dentist at Mission Dental. Joe and his partner Mike are the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. Nervous Dog is becoming the hot new meeting place for the neighborhood. Check it out. -

Re: Progressive Grounds...or Martha's?
Fri, December 8, 2006 - 7:09 PMGeez...I didn't know that there were so many rules in Bernal. When I joined the Tribe I saw others posting without photos so I figured that it was okay. I guess I'll have to figure out how to do it before Wendy will accept my posts.
Anyway, I don't own Nervous Dog nor do I work for them. I live closer to Mission St. than Cortland and I like the diversity on Mission St. so Nervous Dog works for me. I love the decor and the friendly service. The owner, Joe Belen grew up on Mission. His mom was a dentist on the corridor and his brother is a dentist at Mission Dental (in Bernal on Mission St.) Mission St. is in Bernal...note the name on the Post Office door on Tiffany St..Bernal Heights.
I have to confess...I drink Chai Lattes at NDC. I've tried the tea at Martha's and Progressive Grounds and it's awful...or at least I don't like it.
And Wendy...my name is Laurel if that makes you feel better and I've lived in Bernal for 35 years.

Re: Progressive Grounds...or Martha's?
Mon, October 2, 2006 - 6:20 PMI think Martha's has much better coffee. Progressive's patio on a nice day is great, though. The back, dungeon-like room is okay if you don't mind that it's filthy dirty. Nervous Dog is a comfortable place to hang out. The coffee is okay and the treats are pretty much crap.
-
Re: Progressive Grounds...or Martha's?
Tue, October 3, 2006 - 9:05 AMMoonlight for coffee or especially their Chai Latte.
Martha's coffee is better than Progressive Grounds, but the outside patio at Progressive has better atmosphere....still, I have the bad luck to always stop in there when it's full of toddlers.
If it's raining though, outside at Progressive. -

Re: Progressive Grounds...or Martha's?
Thu, October 12, 2006 - 7:59 PMwho are all these no-friendo no-photo people? Sorry, but when I see that I always think it's some kind of undercover marketing sting. Welcome to Tribe---Get some friends and a photo and then I'll try your damn Nervous Dog coffee. Burp! -
-
WTF?
Thu, October 12, 2006 - 9:34 PMLittle paranoid? I'm a no/no, though I have never been to Nervous Dog. I'm just new here, and haven't had a chance to fuss around with the options....does it make my opinion more worthwhile if I snag a faux photo online and spend my free time trying to "meet" people I don't really know?
I'm looking at your photo BTW - can't say that I recall ever seeing you on Cortland.... -

Unsu...
Re: WTF?
Thu, October 12, 2006 - 11:26 PMwell it is easier to remember you and tell you apart from people if you have some sort of identifying photo!
:) -
-
There you go!
Fri, October 13, 2006 - 6:48 AMAn absolutely meaningless (but convenient) picture of one of our cats <g>
Which must means that I am straightforward and honest (and sarcastic?).....
Don't mean to be snippy, but assuming that new people are up so something wasn't very nice either...
And I still haven't tried Nervous Dog - probably won't because there are so many options between here and there. In fact, I think I'm feeling like Martha's today.....

Re: WTF?
Fri, October 13, 2006 - 9:19 AMSorry, but it IS a little suspicious when someone named "L" comes in a thread with no photos or friends and claims that "Nervous Dog is becoming the hot new meeting place for the neighborhood. Check it out." How do I know that person isn't the owner of the shop? -
-
So don't go there!
Fri, October 13, 2006 - 9:54 AMI agree that "L" make have had ulterior motives, but I guess I took the rest of the statement personally....
>>who are all these no-friendo no-photo people? Sorry, but when I see that I always think it's some kind of undercover marketing sting.<<
Which makes it an overreaction on my part as well, perhaps.
Still, L made one post, s/he isn't spamming or asking for $$...nothing to get rattled over... -

Re: So don't go there!
Sun, October 15, 2006 - 1:40 PM"L" has posted on this tribe before. I believe she is active in the Northwest Bernal Alliance, and is not involved with Nervous Dog. Most likely she found the tribe by searching "bernal heights" using blogsearch.google.com -- if you do that, the Bernal tribe comes up at the top of the page. You have to join tribe to post-- but if you've joined to just to respond to a post, you wouldn't have a pic or friends.
Nothing wrong with trying to promote local businesses, anyway.

Re: Progressive Grounds...or Martha's?
Mon, November 13, 2006 - 7:56 AMI don't even know how to "get friends" on Tribe. Sorry for being clueless. I obviously was not spamming for Nervous Dog because I said bad things about their food. Well, it hasn't gotten any better. A banana is usually the best tasting thing there, along with a cup of dark roast. -

Re: Progressive Grounds...or Martha's?
Mon, November 20, 2006 - 5:35 PMI just discovered the Liberty Cafe bakery! Pasteries pretty good... but not as good as Martha's!
It's got cute secluded patio. -

Re: Progressive Grounds...or Martha's?
Mon, December 11, 2006 - 4:07 PMLiberty Cafe makes me feel as if I'm a casualty of some obscure class war that I didn't realize was being fought.
<feminism> Chicks seem to dig it, though </feminism>
Seriously though, I like PG and M both, but I always go to M, to save two blocks of walking. M's coffee does something evil and irresistable to my brain...

Re: Progressive Grounds...or Martha's?
Fri, December 22, 2006 - 9:29 AMNo worries. The photo- and friends-obsessed folks on this thread are way too uptight.
The best combination is the coffee from Martha's and the blueberry corn muffin from Liberty Cafe. Enjoy.

Re: Progressive Grounds...or Martha's?
Mon, November 20, 2006 - 10:37 PMHi!
I just moved to Bernal and I like coffee and I have some friends and some pictures and no axe to grind.
What a beautiful place to live!
Cheers!
