What elevation are we at?

I have been wondering...if there was a sudden flood...due to global warming... would running to the top of the hill save my life?

or

do i need to get a boat to put on the top of my building?

  • You misunderstand how global warming effects sea levels.

Catastrophic rise in sea level would be several centimeters measured over tens of years, not a sudden flood.

    Look, a pretty graph: www.grida.no/climate/vital/19.htm

I sure hope I misunderstand it. Then I could stop worrying.

I just saw an Inconvienent Truth.

Al Gore says that ice shelves in Antartica or Greenland can melt pretty fast due to feedback effects. And they are already melting. According to Al Gord SF is gone if that happens.

      yipes.
      • It's too bad that Gore's movie didn't explain sea level rise better than that.

I looked up to see what the movie said.. it talked about a 20-foot rise in sea level, but I couldn't find when it said that would happen. I guess I have to watch the movie.

Sea level rise is gradual. By 2100, a sea level rise of 20 INCHES -- not feet -- is expected.

That said, a rise of just a few meters will have catastrophic effects, resulting in millions and millions of deaths around the world, especially in poor, low-elevation places like Bangladesh and parts of China. Gore is talking about a six meter rise in sea level, and Bernal would still be dry, but you would already be dead.

I don't know how accurate this is, but you can play with rising sea levels super-imposed on Google maps images here: flood.firetree.net
        • It is believed that global flooding can begin quite suddenly. Archeology has shown that the last Ice Age went from balmy weather to ice within 20 years. As the permafrost and the glaciers melt the melting increases steadily. The same thing happens in your freezer. You can unplug it and open the door and the ice will sit there for awhile and it won't look like anything's going on. Then it begins to melt. And it keeps melting faster and faster because there is less coldness nearby to keep the remaining ice cold. The other factor is the reflectivity of the ice itself in beaming the sun's rays back up. With less ice there is less white surface to reflect back.

Bernal will be safe since it is built largely on rock. Most of SF will not be safe as it is built largely on sand.

The country of Tuvalu is quickly losing its land mass, and it has been increasing each year. Soon there will be no Tuvalu left. They can no longer farm in some areas and their economy has taken a hit. The only saving grace is that the Internet domain name suffix for Tuvalu is .TV, which is being sold to lots of people who want a .TV on their domain names. This is oddly enough helping to keep their economy going. The people of Tuvalu have petitioned various countries to accept them as citizens. I'm not sure if any country has taken them in or not. Imagine being without a country because it disappeared beneath the ocean.
          • The Tuvulo story is quite disturbing! I work with a non-profit Global Exchange that is trying to raise enough money to bring a young man from the island nation to the US this fall to talk about how climate change is affecting his country and how our addiction to oil is making it happen at faster and faster rate.

Gore's movie was interesting because there wasn't one magic method for changing the trajectory of climate change but it needed at least a dozen small steps... I'll write more when I know if we've gotten a visa and tickets for our friend from Tuvulo.
