Aura closing / other openings?

I noticed about a month ago that Aura's closed. I was wondering if anyone knew what was going to take its place.

Also, I love the restaurants already in the neighborhood but I think there could be better food still. We are sooo close to The Mission where there is a great abundance of fantastic food, some of it very reasonably priced. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I've noticed that some members here seem to be very active in neighoborhood planning-type stuff, so does anyone know of any new restaurant openings?

I've also seen a store more towards the Bayshore side of Cortland, sort of across the street from Little Nepal. I saw they had applied for a liquor license, which is exciting. Does anyone know what this place might be?

That is all, except... What is up with the new-ish art gallery that opened up on Cortland? I don't mean to be rude, but what is going on with those pregnant elephant/human things? Would anyone have those in their house? It's cool that they wanted to make a go at an art gallery here in Bernal Heights, but I just can't see it surviving for long. Sounds rude. I'm a cynic, sorry. Oscar Wilde said a cynic is someone who know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

I agree with you Matt...just last night my husband and I were looking to eat on courtland, and there could definitely be more options...plus more reasonable ones...We were trying to figure out how some restaurants have survived even though they were practically empty on a friday night...(hunan and the mexican restaurant)....

Don't know what's going to replace Aura...but whoever is, i wish them luck, cause that space seems cursed. It's gone through like 4 or 5 restaurant changes in the past 4 years, and Aura was just about the fastest in closing. Any idea why? was the food not so great? I was really eager on trying the place, considering the chef was a guest judge chef on Top Chef (was kind of mean on the show too...).

And a bit disappointed on the gallery as well...there's only so far godess worshipping art can go...we'll see what happens. I am curious about the photography studio...hope that will be a gallery as well...i've seen the guys work (kingmond.com) online and it looks interesting.

    Thanks for this insightful post...

I think Hunan Chef must be a front for drug dealing, because it has been there for years, and I don't think I have ever seen more than one person in there ever. I went there twice, hoping to like it, because they have a lot of fake meat, but it's quite gross.

I loved Aura.. we went their a lot and am sad they closed..

Hunan Chef is almost 100% take-out/delivery, which is why no one is ever there. But if you interested in drug deals, check out the new smoke shop/crackpipe shop on bayshore next to flowercraft.

tablehopper says it's going to be Peruvian (though it was supposed to open in December?):

"I have been a big fan of the authentic Peruvian food at Mochica since it opened (and no, it's not because of its proximity to the End Up—those dark days are done). Chef/owner Carlos Altamirano will be taking over the old Moki's Sushi and Pacific Grill space in Bernal Heights, and reopening it as ~PIQUEOS~ (which means "small plates") by the end of December. Altamirano has had the concept in his head for some time, and says, "I wanted a second baby." The look will be colonial European, with more style and atmosphere than the Harrison Street location. The space will have 50 seats, and he plans to open the patio later into 2007. The menu will be focused on regional Peruvian tapas that extend past the usual suspects of ceviche and anticuchos. Altamirano recently traveled all over Peru, researching dishes from the various regions. While he gets this second location up and running, he will be promoting Mochica chef Abraam Rodriguez, who has been cooking there for the past two years. 830 Cortland Ave."

Sounds great, hope it actually opens.
