you can go volunteer at this community garden/farm and take home fresh organic veggies as your pay.
it's a great place to take the kids.
www.alemanyfarm.org/
it's right on the south edge of bernal heights. some way cool young urban hippies have reclaimed this parks and rec land for growing organic fruits, herbs and veggies.
i took the tour on saturday and loved it!
they also are doing great outreach to the public housing projects and providing a summer job and stipend for youth to learn green sustainable agriculture skills.
they get my award for best new project!

Re: has anyone seen the new alemany farms project below st mary's and holly park?
Thu, June 14, 2007 - 6:49 PMDo you mean the old SLUG ( san francisco league of urban gardeners) garden right next to public housing? The one with a wind mill and a pond?
If so, yes, and I have worked there with SLUG a few years back.
If so, I have not seen it recently, but if infact this is the same location, very cool spot and glad to hear it has been given new life as SLUG lost its federal funding and had to close its doors.
I take it personally because I was project director of the Muwekma Ohlone Sanctuary on Islais creek, until Muni and the Port of San Francisco destroyed it a couple of years ago. ( www.islaiscreek.org)
Also, speaking of parks, have you seen all the bulldozers at the park just next to the Farm at Potrero avenue and Chavez?
What is that all about?
David, and thanks for making your posting. -

Thu, June 14, 2007 - 11:49 PMyes, they have reclaimed the old slug project. you can still see the slug acronym on the windmill.
it's really great what they are doing. they have herb gardens and delicious fruit and veggies they give away to anyone who volunteers. and they're all young and enthusiastic (which does this old activist good!)
so sorry muni and the port destroyed your work. this country has no respect for native american heritage. that really sucks. reparations!

Fri, June 15, 2007 - 6:13 PMReparations would be great, but I aint holding my breath with the current Bush regime.
Thanks for your compassion about the Muwekma Ohlone Sanctuary.
I will have to make a visit to the new alemany farms project soon.Take care.
