Has anyone had their hair cut at Tom's? How is it? Cost?
I'm hoping to find a convenient place to get my locks trimmed. Nothing fancy, but I don't want to walk out with a Martha Stewart haircut, which is what happened with my last cut someplace else. I want someone who can keep it simple but has an edge. Thanks.

Robert, Robert, Robert!!!
Sun, May 14, 2006 - 10:56 AMTom's is excellent.
Robert is the best. (Tom & Laura are good too, but I stick with Robert). He asks lots of questions and tells you what he's doing, rather than surprising you with a Martha Stewart 'do. He's pretty quiet, but I like that because he's focused on the hair and not small talk. He's also got great ideas and I trust his judgement. Tom is the colorist, and I've seen him do some funky jobs, but I still swear by Robert.
All haircuts used to be $25, but I think they recently increased it to $30, which is still a great deal. They usually don't shampoo you first, just spray your hair down with a bottle and then cut. This makes for a quicker experience, albiet less luxurious. Extra bonus: You can usually get some neighborhood gossip while you're in the chair.

Re: Tom's on Cortland reviews?
Thu, June 15, 2006 - 12:23 PMThanks again for the review. I went to see Robert and he did a great job. And it was good to know they don't shampoo. I washed my hair at home before walking over, and there was no problem.
I just gave Robert some parameters... make my face look less chubby and don't make me look like martha... and he figured out the rest. I got dozens of compliments. Literally, several times a day people would tell me how much they loved my new haircut. -

Tue, June 27, 2006 - 11:35 AMI really love Caleb (Kaleb? Calib?) at Hair Play on Dolores...probably a bit more pricey than Tom's, but every time I go he knows EXACTLY what to do and totally listens to what I want. I love him! -

Tue, September 5, 2006 - 11:46 PMI got my hair cut by Tom himself a few weeks ago! (I really do have hair in real life!) Did a great job. I paid about $35 w/out the tip. You'll walk out of there looking cute.

Thu, October 5, 2006 - 2:01 PMWhile I hope Olive is no longer waiting to get her hair cut <g> I did want to add my opinion.
I just tried Tom's, and was very pleased- Tom understands curly/long hair, he listens to what you want, and he absolutely does not get carried away chopping hair off.
Good place- I'm glad I gave it a chance.

Re: Tom's on Cortland reviews?
Fri, October 6, 2006 - 3:56 PMI got my haircut by Robert after the first few reviews and he was fantastic. Then he left for Paris and I went to see Tom. It wasn't as good.
The haircut itself was fine, but didn't have that extra special-ness that Robert achieved.
Tom took a phone call halfway through my cut, and it was a little rude. He was still on the phone when I paid for my cut and walked out.
I'm back on the streets looking for a new affordable, cute haircut.

Re: Tom's on Cortland reviews?
Tue, January 16, 2007 - 10:29 AMI have been here twice and both times have received excellent cuts by stylist named California. She cuts men's hair really well and always has great fun conversations. I walked in not knowing what I wanted and she suggested a cut and then went to work and it looks great! Plus I'm in love, she's totally hot! I will definitely be going back. -

Re: Tom's on Cortland reviews?
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 2:51 PMTom's on Cortland news! Tom sold the biz out to Cid, and he's moving to Amsterdam. They're renaming the place Barberella, and completely redoing the whole place. It's looking really cute in there so far.
There's a wonderful new cut/colorist named Carol (replacing Tom) who I saw the other day and she did a fantastic job on my cut. However, their old lease ran out and their rent has skyrocketed so their rates have gone UP to make up for it. Prepare to pay a lot more than you used to, if you book an appointment. My cut was 65 bucks, used to be 40 something. But, I'll go back to Carol, she's great and worth the money for sure.

cinta in financial district
Sat, July 14, 2007 - 11:26 PMwell i know it's not in walking distance but it is a vidal sasson salon and several tribers work there. some of them are in training so if you are broke ass social justice worker like me who still wants a bangin style, you can go there and let the newbs cut your hair while they are learning from a master stylist. the cool thing is if the newb messes up even the slightest bit, the master stylist just goes in and fixes your hair and trains the person right then and there so you are assured of getting a decent cut.
and it costs a whopping 10 bucks. you get a vidal easy to replicate style for very cheap.
takes longer since they're training on your head but hey, that's what the copies of vanity fair and the new yorker are for!
